5 Mistakes I See Coaches Make Right Out of Coach Training Certification

Apr 06, 2026

That keep talented coaches stuck longer than they need to be.

Right after certification, something subtle shifts.

You move from a structured learning environment into open, unstructured space.

No syllabus.
No deadlines
No clear next module.

Just you... and the question:
Now what?

This is where many coaches begin to feel overwhelmed or unsure.

In this season, I see five common mistakes show up — not because coaches are doing something wrong, but because the timing and order of what deserves attention can be unclear.

Let's walk through them.

Mistake #1: Taking Another Modality Certification Immediately

Learning feels productive and safe — and continued growth is valuable.

But often what’s missing isn’t another modality. It’s confidence in your identity as a coach, comfort being seen, and knowing how to begin working with real clients.

Instead of adding more coaching tools, focus on building your professional foundation:
  • How are you articulating what you do beyond saying, “I’m a health coach”?
  • How clearly can you describe the transformation you support?
  • Where and how are you building visibility?
  • How are you learning to sustain your work?
If you feel unsure in these areas, that’s not a cue to collect more modalities. It’s a cue to be intentional about what you choose to learn — skills that build confidence and real-world traction.

There’s a time for advanced modality training. But in your first 6–12 months, identity and visibility matter more than expanding into another modality.

Mistake #2: Trying to Help Everyone

Choosing a niche feels limiting. But broad messaging, while safe, can keep you invisible.

What’s often missing is clarity — and permission to start somewhere.

Instead of trying to help everyone, spend time reflecting on what truly aligns in this season.

Choose a starting niche.

It’s not forever — but having one to begin can be helpful.

Specificity builds resonance.

Resonance builds trust.

Mistake #3: Building Everything Alone

You may feel like you “should” know how to do this now. But isolation often slows clarity and reinforces self-doubt.

What’s often missing is perspective, feedback, and steady encouragement.

Instead of trying to figure everything out on your own, consider joining a coaching community, working within a team, or seeking mentorship.

Community doesn’t eliminate the learning curve — it supports you through it.

Confidence grows faster in conversation.

Mistake #4: Trying to Be on Every Social Platform

Visibility can feel like being everywhere. But scattered effort rarely builds traction.

Often what’s driving this isn’t strategy — it’s fear.

Fear that if you’re not everywhere, you’ll miss potential clients.

In the early stages of building your coaching work, instead of spreading yourself across multiple platforms, consider choosing one platform where your people already are and committing there.

Show up consistently for 6-12 months. Build trust over time.

You likely don’t need ads yet.

You need repetition and trust.

(And if social media isn't your starting place, local communities work too.)

Mistake #5: Staying in Endless Pro Bono Mode

Charging can feel uncomfortable. You may feel you shouldn't charge because you want more practice first.

But if coaching is meant to be your career, learning to charge is part of the professional shift.

Instead of continuing open-ended pro bono sessions, consider designing your pro bono work intentionally — with a defined container and a clear transition point.

Practice offering a paid continuation.

Talking about money takes practice. Confidence grows through doing.

If your time and resources are limited in your first year after certification, focus on:
  • Articulation
  • Niche clarity
  • Community and mentorship
  • Consistent visibility
  • Communicating your value and fees
Certification was the beginning.

The 'what next' phase can feel like a different world.

But with the right focus — and the right support — momentum builds faster than you think.
